Younger audiences would be completely turned off from reading a scholarly, peer-reviewed article and wouldn’t even give it a second glance. There is a lot of text all crammed together in a long article. There isn’t any pictures or colors throughout the text. It may seem very boring and not very appealing. To attract a younger audience, I would turn this research article into a storybook. I would incorporate a story into this experiment to showcase the information. I feel like a story with fun characters in it would entertain a younger audience more. It would make it more interesting to read. I would also add more pictures and colors to the text to make it more visually pleasing. To make it easier to read, I would use vocabulary everyone can understand instead of jargon that only a certain group would know. A little humor to the story would also make it more appealing and entertaining to a younger audience. A younger audience would generally be more attracted to reading something that is a lot more interesting and fun. A storybook can be successful in changing a scholarly, academic journal into something younger people would be more interested in reading.
Similarly, this academic article wouldn’t be that appealing to an older audience either. An older audience wouldn’t be attracted in how long and in depth the article is. Older audiences tend to be busier, and have a family to take care of or work long hours. They would just want a quick, easy read so I would change this scholarly article into a news report that could be found on TV. This could be a 10-15 minute segment of a news channel to highlight the important information in the experiment. Older people tend to watch the news more often right when they get off of work in the evening. It is also a efficient way to get the information across. The older audience can just sit there and watch the news report. They would be more attracted to this medium because they can still do other things while watching the news report since they are very usually very busy people as mentioned before. A news report would be more effective in appeal an older audience than an scholarly academic journal.
Hello Sandy,
ReplyDeleteI see where your ideas are going but I feel like you can specify it a little bit more. Like what exact age ranges do you plan on having for each genre? this would help you identify what exact conventions you should use for your story book. When you explained the TV news segment I thought about something more like an educational show on discovery channel. 10-15 min show on a news channel seems like something a bit too long for a news segment. But this is just my opinion, I do like the idea! I am just giving my ideas on how you can improve your genres = ). Other than that, The genres you have chosen seem like a great way to express the scholarly article you are looking into.Hope this helps, good luck with your project!
Hey Sandy. The experiment idea is interesting, and I would have liked to know more on the actual procedures described in the article. It doesn't really matter that you don't include the procedure in the PB, but I think it would be a good idea to incorporate it into your translations. Your awareness of how different genres appeal to different age groups is insightful. You mention a lot of aspects of the storybook that will appeal to young children. However, I think the reader would like to know more on the specifics of your story, such as the actual plot or format. Additionally, your idea of a 15 minute news segment seems like a lot of work! You can definitely shorten it; I think most people will be able to cover the basics of an entire academic text in less than five minutes. Other than making your translation ideas a little more specific, I think they're good to go. Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteHey Sandy!
ReplyDeleteThe article you chose is really interesting. For your idea on the storybook, I like how you include information on how to turn the scholarly article that may seem boring and uninteresting for the younger audience into a storybook. The idea of a storybook is great because they are simple and easy to understand. I was wondering how you would turn the experiment into a story and what the story would be. I really like your idea of a news report. Instead of having it last for ten to fifteen minutes, I think you should make it shorter since ten minutes is already too long and may lose the audience’s attention and interest. Again, I am wondering what information this genre will contain. Everything sounds good to me so far. Keep up the good work!
Sandy,
ReplyDeleteYou've got good ideas here. I especially like how you mentioned older folks have less time available. That's true... until.... retirement! Make sure you get as specific you can about the demographic variables that might influence the genres your select. Villalva hit that one right on the nose. :)
